Daily Devotion #6
A merry heart does good, like medicine,
But a broken spirit dries the bones. Proverbs 17: 22
Merry from the Hebrew dictionary means, joyful, showing joyful, glad and you who rejoice. Heart has an interesting meaning: inner man, mind and will. Medicine means, cure or a healing. Now let’s unpack this passage and how it applies to us.
Being joyful has it’s benefits as we see in this passage. Joy comes from our inter man or spirit. Joy is different from being happy but joy actually gives us strength in the battle of life. How exactly do we get this kind of joy?
Psalms 16:11 says, “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.”
A merry or joyful heart is like medicine to us. I heard of a pastor that was diagnosed with a terminal disease and began seeking God for healing. He fead on the Word of God in order to build his faith, prayed, kept positive believing people around him and watched a lot of funny movies in order to laugh. He realized he needed a merry heart to receive his healing and he was healed.
God wants us to have joy in our lives. Not have a broken spirit which dries up the bones. Broken means smite. In other words their spirit is attacked by the evil one and it dries up your bones or deflates your power to keep on moving forward.
A merry heart is when you have expectation or realize you have a future and things are only getting better. A broken spirit on the other hand leaves you with no expectation or things getting better but worse.
Lord help us to have a merry heart or joy so we can receive our healing in body and spirit. Teach us to spend time with you daily for in your presence is a fullness of joy. Heal those with a broken spirit so they can enjoy your joy. In Jesus Name Amen
