Daily Devotion #12
Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips. Proverbs 27:2
I lover Proverbs because they just come out and say what they mean. The writer wrote them to help us live our daily lives in a way that pleases God. This Proverb is no different.
Really what this Proverb is saying don’t be prideful and boast of your accomplishments. I know people that will preach on humility and then tell you how they are excellent and above others. The Pharisees did this they bragged about what they did regarding the law.
They boasted about their prayers and giving among other things. I personally always get sick in my spirit when I hear someone bragging about how great they are because it just does not fit into what God wants us to do.
Ephesians says, we are saved by grace (God’s unmerited love) not of works lest we should brag (my paraphrase). God’s grace is a gift that we have to receive in order to be saved it has nothing to do with our works or how good a person we are.
Grace according to Titus teaches us in righteousness and it also empowers us to do what God has called us to do. Works has it’s place but the writer tells us to let others even strangers boast about us.
How does a stranger boast about you? When pressures come and they see you standing on God’s Word instead of stressing. When others gossip and you walk away. When your neighbor is in trouble and you help them expecting nothing in return. When your boss asks someone to stay over and work. I could go on and on but you get the point, your actions cause others to boast about you.
Lord help us to focus on you and doing what you’ve called us to do. Train us to keep our mouths from boasting and if we do boast let it be about you or others. In Jesus Name Amen
