And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-14
This Sunday many churches celebrated Pentecost Sunday celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit to the church. Some believes believe that the Spirit was only given to the Apostles in the scriptures while others believe the Baptism of the Spirit is for all believers. I believe the latter; the Spirit is given to the church today just as it was in Bible times.
In this blog I want to look specifically at the work of the Spirit in the lives of believers according to the Word of God. The Third Person of the Trinity is still present today as He was on the first day of Pentecost.
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. John 14:26
Jesus said the Father would send the Holy Spirit to teach us all things and remind us of what we have been taught. I know when I first accepted Christ as my savior there were things I just did without someone setting me down to teach me, I just knew that I needed to do them. For instance I always read novels that weren’t Christian books and listened to worldly music immediately I replace the world’s book and music for Gods.
“I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17
The Holy Spirit is given to us to help us. Help us how? Help us to live for God in a sinful world. Help us to not faint. Help us to know what God has for us. Help us to run our race.
“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” John 7:38-39
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8
Rivers flow and give life to vegetation so the Holy Spirit is meant to flow out of believers and make a difference in the lives they touch. Rivers give life!
Finally, believers receive power which empowers them to be witnesses to the world. On the day of Pentecost 3000 people were added to the church and quickly. Peter stood us and preached and those who heard him received Christ as their savior their lives were changed forever.
Peter the one that had denied Christ spoke and they who heard him believed!
There are more functions of the Holy Spirit this blog by no means has covered all but the important thing is have you received the baptism of the Holy Spirit? All you have to do is ask.
