In today’s world it can be difficult to know and understand God’s purpose for your life. People spend their entire lives trying to find out what exactly their purpose is and isn’t. In this blog I am going to talk about purpose: what it is and how do you find your unique purpose.

Webster’s defines purpose as, “the reason why something is done or used : the aim or intention of something.”

In the Bible when God created man He gave him three specific instructions: (1) be fruitful and multiply (2) have dominion or subdue all created things (3) work and keep the Garden (Gen. 1:28, 2:25). These three refer to purpose as it pertains to mankind.

As we know when Adam and Eve sinned they gave their power on earth to the evil one. When God distributed the punishment man’s was to exit the Garden and his work would essentially be hard. Some people take the punishment as an indication that work was a product of Adam’s sin, not so as we stated earlier work in the Garden started before the fall, it became harder after sin.

Now when Jesus came to this earth He took away the sins of man and restored what the enemy had stolen from mankind. The problem is when we received Christ there is still some confusion concerning purpose and how you and I are to live with purpose.

Romans 12:2 talks about “renewing our minds” which is an essential component of finding one’s purpose. The scripture goes on and gives the reason for “renewing the mind”, “that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” If we try to pursue purpose without the renewing of our minds then we can miss “what is good, acceptable, and perfect.”

One’s vocation is an important element to their purpose. People spend an enormous amount of time at work, which is where they earn money and make relationships with people outside their local church. Some people believe that your gifts, talents and finances are only for the local church but actually we are called to influence where we spend the most time, work.

What’s happened for many is they haven’t found their unique purpose which allows them to use their gifts and talents, so work becomes hard and unsatisfying. This is why it is so important to identify your gifts and talents so you can use them in your everyday life.

Purpose is what causes one to get up every morning with a passion to make a difference. Purpose is what drives a person to get earlier and stay later than everyone else. Purpose is how God designed you and I to exist!

Ways you can find your purpose:

1. Pray and ask God to show you what He designed you for and to do.

2. Identify your gifts and talents to see what your are suited for.

3. Try things to see what you are good at and not.

4. Talk to close friends and family, asking what they see in you.

5. A clue is if money, location or relationships were not a factor what would you do with your life?

The point is find out what your purpose is and next week we’ll talk about how passion drives you to see your purpose fulfilled.
