All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,  that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

If scripture is inspired of God then for you and I scripture should be of great importance. Paul the writer of 2 Timothy doesn’t just say scripture is of God but he goes on to tell us why scripture is so important. He gives us four benefits of scripture and an ultimate outcome.

First, he states that it is profitable for doctrine. Doctrine is a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church according to google’s dictionary. So, churches and individual’s develop their doctrine or beliefs from the scriptures which is then taught to congregants.

Reproof means a proof, that by which a thing is proved or tested according to Strong’s Concordance. When you and I are presenting Christ it is that the Word of God proves His willingness to save mankind. We use the scripture to argue (not fight but present) or debate God’s existence.

Correction has an interesting meaning in the Greek: reformation. This is a fitting word because the Word of God corrects us or reforms us into God’s way of thinking. It is important to understand that when you and I read, study and memorize scripture it changes us from the inside which manifests on the outside.

Instruction is defined by the KJV Dictionary as o teach; to inform the mind; to educate; to impart knowledge to one who was destitute of it. The scripture is what we use to educate and impart to others not our thoughts or opinions. Scripture gives us the knowledge or God and causes us to engage in the relationship with Him..

The scripture goes on to say that all of the benefits of the scripture is that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. God’s Word is what empowers us to be complete and equipped for every good work.

We as believers need to take God’s Word serious in our maturity process or we’re going to have a lot of dwarfed Christians. Now is the time that God desires to move in the world and He uses people to accomplish His mission to mankind.

We need sound doctrine, reproof (proof), correction, and instruction so we can be equipped and complete.

Action Steps:

  1. Set aside time to read and study God’s Word daily.
  2. Memorize scripture (when it gets in your mind, it eventually gets in your spirit man)
  3. Listen to sound teaching of God’s Word
  4. Meditate on God’s Word
