Uncategorized Influence

After many attempts to start a blog this will be final and most earnest attempt to consistently blog. My intentions are to do a weekly blog with a bi-weekly podcast. The purpose of this blog is to inspire, equip and help believers become leaders.

Today’s blog will be on the topic of influence which by they way is the new name of our Podcast and Blog. Oswald Sanders coined the phrase, “Leadership is influence,” John Maxwell of course has taken this phrase around the world in his books on leadership.

So, if leadership in its simplest meaning is influence, I want to take the time to unpack what exactly influence is. The online dictionary defines influence as:

capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.

As seen in this definition, influence is having an effect on the character, development or behavior of someone or something. Believers are called according to scriptures to have an effect on each of these so, why aren’t we?

Influence can be bad or good. We’ve seen young people influenced by culture in negative, violent and dishonoring ways in the media. Gangs influence groups to steal, devalue life and even kill those who don’t agree with their life style.

Christian’s are told in Matthew 5:13-16 to be “the salt and light of the world.” Believers are told to have a positive influence on the world not negative. We are called to be the light through our character and behavior.

How do we influence the world? By showing them Christ in us! How we treat them, judge them or not, emphasize with then in times of pain. Also sharing the truth of God’s Word with them through how we talk and interact with others.

I’ve worked in several churches and have served on church boards for over 10 years and the one thing that I’ve seen build any church is relationship. People influence those they are in relationship with through their actions. If we are down, poor, angry, depressed etc.. then will others want the gospel or God we serve? No!

People are more likely to be influenced to reach out ot God by seeing believes that are happy, joyful, kind, patient, good stewards etc… This is letting our lights shine in a world that is full of darkness.
