Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.  Proverbs 22:6

I’ve heard this passage spoken many times concerning children that have stepped away from the faith. Parents hold onto this passage with the hope that their child will come back to the Lord. Let’s unpack this passage today.

Train means in the Hebrew, ”dedicate, or discipline.” Training takes discipline and dedication if one is to achieve the results they desire.

It has been my mission to help my children to discipline themselves in they way they should go from an early age. My oldest son has been memorizing scriptures since he was two years old.

I’ve selected books to read so he is learning from great men and women of faith. Daily he confesses his success as a believer.

He tells me he wants to be a chaplain like me and start a Bible college. My job as a dad is to train him, through instruction and modeling how to live in the faith.

The promise in the passage is when he is old he won’t depart from it. My desire and daily prayer is that he never departs from the things of God.

Take time today and get a plan for your children’s growth as a believer and productive citizen. Be intentional in what you teach them and see them not depart from it.
