What is vision?

Over the years I’m sure you’ve heard many sermons and speeches on vision. Some are quite stirring while others seem to miss the mark. Every organization and I would venture to say every person alive needs a vison for the future.

George Barna in his book Vision defines vision for ministry as, “a clear mental image of a preferable future imparted by God to His chosen servants and is based upon an accurate understanding of God, self, and circumstances.”

Dr. Myles Munroe defines vision as, “Purpose is when you know and understand what you were born to accomplish. Vision is when you see it in your mind and begin to imagine it.”

Both definitions help us understand that vision is looking into the future of the organization or one’s life. Vision is a picture of where we want to go and become in the future. Knowing your past and who you are as a person helps to keep one’s vision true to one’s self.

It is important to understand that vision is future minded. In other words this is where we’re at but this is where we want to go.

Vision is always future minded!

I want to say also that God gives us a vision of our future which is tied with our purpose. He gives us vision so we can have hope for the future but it also gives legs to our faith. Faith doesn’t just sit and wait for vision to happen it instead moves towards vision.

Our daily disciplines should have vision in mind as we head towards God’s given vision. Vision will help us make decisions about what tasks to do and not do. If you have a vision for a healthy marriage your decisions should be in alignment with that vision.

Our actions are aligned to our vison!

I have worked for companies and ministries that put a plaque on the wall that has the vison of the company. One church I worked at they gave everyone a card with the vision on one side and the mission on the other. They understood that if people know the vison it helps us keep on track and not get off course.

I also believe that individuals that want to accomplish God’s best should write their vison down and keep it in front of their eyes so they can achieve all God has for them.

Today, I encourage you to take time and ask God what is my vision for the future?
